This is part 3 of a 9-week series exploring the relationship between nervous system regulation and leadership performance. Each week I'll share research, stories, and practical tools that have shaped both my professional career and personal practice.
For twenty years, I thought yoga was making me more flexible.
Looking back, I realized I wasn't just increasing my physical flexibility. I was training one of the most important leadership qualities: composure.
At the time, I didn't have the language for it. I simply noticed that the longer I practiced, the more capable I became of staying present in uncomfortable situations. High-stakes negotiations felt different. Difficult conversations felt different. The pressure hadn't changed, but my response to it had.
Recently, I discovered the U.S. military has been intentionally training the same capacity for decades.
Not to build stronger soldiers, but to build more regulated ones with better decision-making under stress.
Elite Performance Is Built Under Pressure
Researchers studying U.S. special operations forces found that what separated top performers wasn't simply physical fitness or intelligence. It was nervous system resilience: the ability to activate under pressure and return to an optimal state quickly.
In combat, the stakes of a dysregulated decision are immediate and irreversible. Special operators must decide quickly and accurately, with incomplete information, under physical threat, in conditions designed to overwhelm the nervous system. Their training is about building a system that remains coherent when everything around it is chaos.
Fortunately, most of us aren't making life-or-death decisions.
Our nervous systems don't really know that.
A high-stakes board meeting.
A difficult conversation.
An unexpected crisis.
The context is different, but the physiology is remarkably similar.
Our brains process stressful moments through the same survival architecture that evolved to protect us from physical danger. The threat may now be psychological rather than physical, but the body responds much the same way.
The Science of Composure
This is the principle behind Stress Inoculation Training, developed by Dr. Donald Meichenbaum, one of the world's most influential psychologists. His research showed that exposing people to controlled, manageable stress builds the capacity to stay regulated when real pressure arrives. Decades of research have continued to support those findings, demonstrating improvements in both performance anxiety and performance under stress.
More recent neuroscience helps explain why.
Research on the anterior mid-cingulate cortex (aMCC), a brain region associated with persistence and tenacity, suggests it strengthens when we repeatedly choose difficult things instead of avoiding them.
Every intentional encounter with manageable discomfort becomes another opportunity to build resilience under stress.
The Leadership Application: Being Comfortable with the Uncomfortable
When I first learned about this research, something clicked: I realized yoga had never really been about flexibility.
Every posture held beyond the point of comfort was training my brain for stress.
Every slow exhale when my body wanted to quit was relieving my body of tension.
Every moment of staying present when my mind wanted to escape built resilience to change.
That wasn't just stretching or flexibility training.
It was composure training.
And that training transferred.
Into difficult meetings.
Into negotiations.
Into the moments where the quality of my response mattered most.
Different practices.
Working out. Military stress inoculation. Cold exposure. Yoga.
Same principle: Training the nervous system that discomfort does not automatically mean danger.
The leaders who consistently perform well under pressure aren't necessarily the ones who experience the least stress.
They're the ones who have trained themselves to move through it.
Fortunately, composure is trainable through repeated intentional exposure to manageable discomfort.
